Outline the story …

The model (Carrie) contacted me to make a Queen of Hearts costume and wanted it "over the top" with lots of details and color blocking. She also wanted a collar or wish made out of cards. In addition, since this was to be worn to a party, she needed it to be comfortable and to be able to drive in it. That drove many of the decisions including not using a hoop. We worked back and forth on sketches until this design was created.

Outline the construction…

The skirt is constructed like a romantic tutu since I couldn't use a hoop. I made a Basque with 10 layers of net to hold the shape of the skirt. There is then a short section in the front in the red brocade that was embellished with heart shaped rhinestones. The overskirt was constructed with heat-n-bond on the hearts that were then cut out and placed on the trapezoids. I bought a faux fur coat since I couldn't find any trim that looked like ermine and cut it into strips for the edges of the skirt and wisk. The bodice had 9 panels and was lightly boned with spiral steel in the middle of the panels. I made the stripe fabric with strips sewn together. The sleeves have a fitted under sleeve and an oversleeve with 2 layers of net lining to make to poofy. I attached strips in the velvet and metalic fabrics to finish the sleeves. The wisk was formed from millinery wire that was layered with cards attached with hot glue and then stitched in place by hand. On the back side, I used the red brocade as a contrast to the cards. The crown was also made with millinery wire that was covered with gold silk and then lined with beads and fur. I attached the heart on top and middle with wire and then covered the wire with pearls.

The details are insanely pretty, the heart at the back had me screaming.
All the beadwork and cuts – absolutely brilliant.

I adore the collar and it really brings the whole ensemble together, I really appreciate the internal detail pictures as well as the external embellishment pictures.
