Outline the story …

Lately, I've been inspired by Dark Academia and the desire to look like I curate a magical library. So, I set out to make a coat that would fit into the worlds of Ninth House and The Magicians and leave people wondering if I belong to a secret society or two.

Outline the construction…

I started with Butterick pattern B6497 then modified the back using a different pattern to give it more volume. I also re-drafted the sleeves to make a leg o' mutton sleeve. I have not done much drafting or pattern alteration, so this was outside my comfort zone. When choosing materials, I wanted something light enough to hold up the puff of the sleeve but still warm. I ended up choosing a wool twill suiting and a silk dupioni lining. Both fabrics were challenging to work with since they frayed easily but, ultimately, I think they worked well for the garment. The hem is finished with a horsehair braid, which is another technique I had not tried before this project.
