Outline the story …

My entry is inspired by a polish fairy tale I read as a child. Written by Wanda Chotomska "Wars & Sawa Legend" (https://tinyurl.com/khwa3wjy) was one of my favourites.

In the story Sawa is a young, beautiful girl with a kind heart, who stands up to an evil sorcerer. He hates anything outside his river realm. When he comes out of the water the sky starts to turn into flames. He burns trees and destroys anything beautiful or weak in his eyes. Sawa happens upon the destruction and with a bird's nest in her hands, begs the sorcerer to stop. He punishes her for her disobedience, but wants to keep her for her beauty. He turns her into a river mermaid to live with him forever. I always loved her strong character and guts.

My smooth covered stays reflect her pure heart with delicate sky blue colour, but also foreshadow her dark future by a fish scale wings at the bottom. I wanted to portray her in between her transition. I added turquoise beads to reflect her love for nature and bring to mind depths of the river and undoubtedly riches that the sorcerer would try to win her over with. Luckily she gets rescued, by a brave young fisherman - Wars. Sawa is avenged and returns to being a human. They live with Wars happily ever after, founding the city of Warsaw - named after them. Till this day a mermaid is a symbol of Warsaw."

Outline the construction…

I used blue habotai silk for the top layer, reinforced with white cotton. The stays have 20 boning channels and are reinforced with horsehair canvas instead of cardboard and an additional layer of stiff cotton canvas. The inlay is made from pale pink cotton. The stomacher is double sided - embroidered pink and plain blue. It has 10 boning channels and is hand embroidered with a pattern I designed. It's my first embroidery ever - I was very nervous to start - especially with silk threads! I hand sewed almost all of it, except from the boning channels and side stitches of the stays. I felt they needed the sturdiness of machine stitch as I'm not yet a handstitch artist :P.

I used Janet Arnold's pattern for 1625 Smooth Covered Stays, which doesn't have a stomacher, so getting the fit right was interesting. The challenge was avoiding any visible stitching on the silk, especially with the top 'wings'. Rigging those to the ensemble with a rounded needle was exhausting, but so rewarding.

I meant to use pearls and glass beads to adorn the stays, but ended up with what I had on hand which were the turquoise beads. I like how they match the whole thing.

I also had a completely wrong set of stays underneath... yes I know ;)... So it was hard to make the silhouette right. I hope I'm not off too much.
