Red as Wine

Outline the story …
I was inspired by the fable The 12 Dancing Princesses. I wanted to make a skirt out of deep reds, reminiscent of the wine the Eldest sister used to drug the unfortunate men to sleep. I felt it was appropriate for the Eldest princess to dance in a beautifully wide skirt that had both rich colour and textures.
As part of this project I made my very first cage crinoline, using the Truly Victorian 1856 walking cage crinoline pattern. I also made the petticoat that would sit between the crinoline and the skirt.
Outline the construction…
The cage crinoline is made form steel for the hoops (with connectors), cotton fabric for the bottom bag and waist cincher, twill tape, and casing. The petite coat is made from cotton I had in my stash. I used gathering both for the bottom ruffle, and at the waist. It is fastened with buttons.
The skirt is made of 3 layers of pleated fabric, also all from my stash, with a cotton waistband reinforced with a strip of canvas. They layers where spaced to create an open front where each layers could be seen to create a contrast of colour.
(I also intend to make a matching top in the future, with a corset etc. But having never made one before, I knew I wouldn't have time during this competition, so I decided to focus on the skirt, as it would use the most fabric, and I could use the off cuts/extra to make the top at a later date. )
