Outline the story …
My wife Ann Barker loves dragons and the idea of being able to attach wings or tail onto herself. Most method of doing this are only able to hold lightweight wings or don't look good because of their bulk.
We wanted to make a better way of attaching wings to a persons back, while allowing wings to be interchangeable. We decided to try using magnets that would attach to steel boning on the back of a corset.
I decided on doing the Pretty Housemaid corset pattern because it looked relatively simple while giving excellent support for something to be attached to the back. We also like the Silhouette that it provided.
Outline the construction…
I, Jesse Barker created two mockups. The first mockup was too small and was not close enough in size to be able to modify easily. The second mockup was close to the right size, but showed where the corset needed to be taken in to fit Ann Barker better.
The final project was made with synthetic whalebone, steel boning, antique brass grommets, silk bias tape, natural cotton coutil, and white cotton twill. The Fashion layer was going to be some iridescent organza. I discovered that three layers and organza was above my skill level. Instead the white twill became the fashion layer.
The washable fabric marker and grommets I used made a bit more of a mess than I was expecting. We were able to get the corset cleaned up for the most part.
We discovered that the hardest part of using magnets in this project is that each layer of fabric reduces the connection. For the wings we used 70 lbs magnets, Initially they looked like they would work fine on their own. Once construction was finished we found that the wings wanted to rotate from the weight and then slip off. To get the pictures and the video we had to add a magnet on the inside of the corset attached to the steel boning. This allowed us to make the magnets attach to each other with enough strength. This will be a good experience for us when we try to make a better version.
The corset is so clean and pretty and fits so well. I love the cording element of it as well
