FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
Little Red Ridding Hood

Outline the story …
First, it is because of Lizcapism that I took the plunge this year and decided to participate.
I chose the Little Red Riding Hood, Charles Perrault version, because it is a story that really stuck with me ever since I heard it as a child. She is a young girl that is sent on a mission, by her mother, to bring her grandma a galette and a small jar of butter. On the road, she meets a great wolf who will make up a plot to eat the little girl and her grandma. She is described as having a red hood that her grand-mother made her. So I obviously made a red cloak. Wanting to do a costume loosely based on late Victorian school uniforms, I made a white apron. And for the dress, I was inspired by Kiki, from Kiki's Delivery Service and the dresses from Little Women's Atelier, with big puffy sleeves.
Outline the construction…
Almost everything was sewn by machine, apart from seam finishes and eyelets. The cape is made with red cotton and an ivory cotton lining that I sewed right sides facing on both sides. The most difficult part of the cape was to figure out the right size for it to come all the way around and fall nicely in the front. I watched a couple videos to have different ways to make and attach the hood to the rest of the cape and find the most suited for me.
The apron was quite easy, it's 4 rectangles sewed all in French seams, so that the finishes would be clean since the white linen that I chose was quite see through. I liked doing the little loops for the straps on each sides but, as always, the gathers were quite hard to figure out.
The dress is made in blue linen from different patterns for the sleeves and top, and a full circle skirt. The seams are almost all finished by hand with a whip stitch. I struggled a lot with the fitting of the top. I tried the first button hole by hand because my machine doesn't make them, but quickly realized that it would take me way to much time and it was very messy, so I borrowed my grandma's machine and did the remaining ones that way. Putting the sleeves in was surprisingly easy, but I'd say it's because they are quite simple.
