Outline the story …

Lila Bard dreams of being a pirate captaining her own ship and she plans to steal whatever it takes to get there. When we meet this daring cross-dressing cut-purse in A Darker Shade of Magic, she is walking back to her room for the night. Disguised as a man and stopping only for a quick thrill to share the time with a constable using the pocket watch that only moments before she lifted from a distracted gentleman.

From memory the only clothing item I remember is a vest that she keeps her watch pocketed in. I picked the book back up and found that in the first chapter she is said to be wearing a top hat (that is concealing a mask and a broad brimmed cap), gloves, boots, belt, cloak, and finally the vest. Since the vest stuck with me, I thought it would be fun to make one from some time in the 1800s.

Since this is a fantasy series I didn’t want to hold too tightly to one style of fashion especially given the descriptions of clothing so far. I ended up picking an 1830s waistcoat pattern. After further research and seeing lots of bright gold waistcoats under dark coats I knew that was exactly what I wanted to make for this character.

Outline the construction…

This waistcoat was designed with the idea that Lila would have very likely stolen it to blend in with higher society and get close enough to pick their pocket. I decided to only create one garment because I wanted to take more time to sew it completely by hand. First I compared different styles and ended up using an 1830s waistcoat pattern from black snail pattern. I chose this gold striped silk and paired it with a middle weight linen for the back, and lining. I used heavier weight linen as interlining and used a twill tape to secure it. I attached premade strawberries and leaves to give it a pop of color. Almost every decision I made about this project was with the idea that I had never done it before. The pattern was new. I have never sewn with silk, or made welt pockets. I have only hand sewed one garment prior to this one. and I’ve never made a waistcoat before. All of this made it a challenge and a delight to work on.
