Outline the story …

"Le Parfum de la Dame en Noir" is a French novel from Gaston Leroux. He is one of my favorite writers. I read this book for the first time when I was a teenager. I loved the mystery behind the character. The book gives very little information about this character. La Dame en Noir (the Lady in Black) is only known by her black clothes and her perfume. It is because of her perfume that the main character, Rouletabille, discovers her real identity.

My inspiration for the dress was mourning dresses from the Edwardian period. Never in the book it is said she is in mourning, but during each visit to Rouletabille at the orphanage, she always wears black. Having little to no description is both a good and bad thing. It is bad as there is very little to base the design on, but it's great as the dress is as I imagined it every time I have read the book.

Outline the construction…

I used chiffon and lace for the dress. The lace is for the top of the dress, the belt and the bottom. A different type of lace was used for the sleeves. I have created my pattern as I am unable to read a pattern (not that I am good at creating one). My 11 year-old daughter is wearing the dress. So it is to her fit. I have used images on Pinterest to see different ways to create the shape I wanted.
I have taken all the pictures. My daughter is my model. The biggest challenge was the sleeves. I have found making the skirt part quite enjoyable.

Just starting that book, and I applaud you! Seems a lot of male authors give little info on women’s clothing. Nice decisions!

Beautiful interpretation of Edwardian fashion. I love the shadow stripe fabric and the combination of laces to create an all-black gown that is anything but plain or boring.

It was really gusty using chiffon. It is a fabric that many of us with experience don’t like working with. Good job.
