Outline the story …
Like many people, I have loved Alice in Wonderland since I was little. After COVID hit the US, I really needed a pick-me-up and attempted to make a fun costume for myself. I thought the Mad Hatter would be fun so I started that but quickly ran out of motivation (it's still not done...oops.) Fast forward to the very end of December and I heard that Foundations Revealed was holding a costume contest all about making costumes for literary characters. I gave it some thought and my heart wandered back to one of my favorite stories. But this time, rather than the Mad Hatter, why not try my hand at the loveable White Rabbit? I sketched a few ideas and the anthropomorphized midcentury version made me the most excited. So, off I went and here we are! A white fluffy skirt and ears are nods to the fur on a rabbit. The heart button and heart patterned shirt are nods to the Red Queen herself. And who doesn't love a good waistcoat?
Outline the construction…
I kept the materials limited, mostly for consistency and budget concerns. The skirt was by far the easiest part. I used my favorite gored circle skirt pattern and whipped it up in no time. The rest was a bit more challenging. I used two patterns from Mood Sewciety for the vest and shirt. The shirt sizing was incredibly large and I realized halfway through that I would have to cut it down two sizes. The vest, however, ran small. The Sewciety patterns are often touted as easy, beginner-to-intermediate patterns and I quickly found out that's not the case. The instructions were vague and while I have sewn for a few years, I still need solid guidance in a few places. Spiral-steel boning helped lend structure to the cotton sateen vest and after I added the tails on the back, it looked much better than how it started. I redid the shirt sleeves so they had a proper cuff and added bias binding for extra stability and a nice pop of color. And while I am proud of getting through a pillbox, I have learned that even if I practice every day for the next year, millinery will not ever be my strongsuit. But that's okay! I think it still turned out pretty well for my first try even if it's not perfect.

I love the fluffy white skirt for the rabbit, and the red waistcoat! Very cute! You did a great job of the hat too, so well done for trying out a new skill! (Also good luck for when you get round to finishing your Mad Hatter costume too! Procrastination is one of my strong suits, so I sympathise with the struggle of unfinished projects!)
