Outline the story …

One of my favorite stories is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and my favorite character from the book is the Ghost of Christmas Present. Their introduction is warm and jovial and their message is one of generosity and good will. During this year of plague, social injustice, and capitalist greed, it was especially important to remember their lesson: to find light in the darkest of nights and help your fellow man.

Dickens describes the Ghost of Christmas Present as wearing a fur-lined green robe with a wreath of holy and icicles. Instead of a robe I opted to challenge myself by making an Elizabethan gown with ribbon and fur trim. A coif embroidered with holy and icicles took the place of the wreath.

Outline the construction…

I first made a mock of the gown bodice using the pattern from The Elizabethan Working Woman's Wardrobe by Margo's Patterns and some poly-cotton fabric. I then used the fitted mock as a block and cut the lining as one piece out of the same fabric. The two pieces were basted together and half inch zip ties were sewn in as boning. The completed lining was used as a pattern block for the outer fabric of green cotton flannel and everything was basted together. The edges were whip stitched to the lining and any visible basting stitches were removed. Hooks and eyes were attached to the front for closures. The skirt of the gown was made using the pattern from the same set the bodice was from. The pieces were cut from the green cotton flannel and sewn together. The waist was gathered and finished with white bias tape then attached the bodice by hand using a running stitch. My mum helped to level the hem and finished it with a whip stitch. The ribbon trim was made by hand sewing thin gold braid to a white satin ribbon and attached to the gown with a running stitch. I then took white embroidery thread and made alternating stars and French knots at 1 inch intervals. The faux fur trim was cut from a yard of fabric into 1 inch strips, sewn, then trimmed. I drafted the coif pattern directly onto white fabric, hand embroidered the piece, then made up the coif.
