Outline the story …

This design is inspired by the character Feyre from Sarah J Maas's book series "A Court of Thorns and Roses". This dress is specifically from the third book, "A Court of Wings and Ruin". My design is a combination of design choices from three illustrators that have drawn three version of Feyre I liked: Charlie Bowtar, Adrian Daditch, and Yvonne Gilbert. I saw their interpretations of this character I loved in the corresponding coloring book (which ended up being a great inspiration piece) and I loved different parts of their looks, so I decided to try to blend them together with elements I thought would be nice. Feyre is such a strong character but nuanced, and when she puts on this dress she is putting on armor; she is putting on a show of how powerful she is and what she (and her friends and allies) can do to the enemy. I wanted to make something that invoked that, something that was elegant but strong and that I felt strong in when wearing it.

Outline the construction…

To make the dress, I used McCall's pattern MP259 and altered it so it had a low back, changed the sleeves and lowered the neckline. For the main body of the dress, I used a cosplay mirror foil fabric in the color Oil Slick. For the sleeves and yoke, I used a black performance mesh and then used a black lace fabric (I can't remember the type unfortunately) and then cut out the shapes that I liked and arranged them onto the sleeves, neck, and back in a way that I thought looked nice and then sewed them down by hand. I also used metallic embroidery floss for the details around the mountains, stars, and swirl appliques, and it was QUITE difficult to use, especially with the main dress fabric. The mirror foil fabric is quite plastic-y so it makes it difficult to sew through (by hand or by machine). YouTube was quite helpful in trying to figure out how to attach the sleeve applique and when deciding how to attach the rhinestones (I did what Angela Clayton did for her Peacock dress, E6000) and my mother was also a resource that I used quite a bit: she used to sew all of our Christmas outfits and Halloween costumes so I knew she could help point me in the right direction when I had a question.

As a huge fan if the “Court of feelings and tears” series, it makes me so happy to see a Feyre dress! Looks exactly like I wouldve expected her to wear in the book 🙂 Great job!
