Outline the story …

Ever since stumbling on Frances Grimble's Reconstruction Era Fashions in my library years ago I fell in love with the 1868 Tamla with a peaked back. I also realized that Laura Ingalls Wilder was born a year or so later. Thus I was inspired to make this as something Caroline Ingalls would wear!
Maybe not to an opera, but perhaps to a family party, or in the spring to care for the live stock.

Outline the construction…

This cape is made with a wool plaid, yarn dyed cotton flannel, and cotton velveteen recycled from an old blazer.

This is my first time drafting a garment and I had to free style the curves, as at the time I didn't own a curved ruler, I also added two gores so that it would close in the front.

Other challenges include easing the front gores so that the plaid matches, learning to sew binding on completely by hand, and working with velvet for the first time.

She's completely hand sewn, both because I enjoy it and Caroline wouldn't have access to a sewing machine for twenty more years.

Thank you so much! Matching the plaid was very tedious! And it’s very comfy! ❤️
