big Red riding hood

Outline the story …

Red Riding hood is no longer a child, she now stalks the forest in search for the deadly wolves that terrorise her village. Her beautiful red cloak has been extended as she has grown and patched where it has caught on the undergrowth, the change to a darker shade of red, her cloak now soaked with the blood of the wolves she has killed. Her time is spent embroidering protection symbols and other ancient markings on her cloak.

Outline the construction…

A 3/4 circle cloak is made with six separate panels of double gauze fabric, used for its drape and flowing nature and not to made the cloak to heavy. each panel was made with two different shades of the fabric, cut on the bais and joined together using Sashiko embroidery and Boro techniques. The front two panels have the addition of quilting to resemble padded body armour. The six panels were hand sewn together with a running back stitch before the seams were felled down. The hood was machine sewn, the seams were then hand felled and hand sewn on to the cloak. The cloak was further embellished with embroidery. The hem was left raw to keep in with the inspiration that it had been worn away.
I had a few problems with the quilting designs, using tissue paper for the pattern it was hard to remove it when the stitching was done. I was hoping that layering the fabrics would cause it to ombre, the colour change is a bit more stark than I wanted. i would have liked to add more embroidery but run out of time.

I absolutely LOVE the boro patching and how its used in this stunning piece, how you achieved that gradient and that texture is just incredibly impressive. Absolutely beautiful piece, I wish I could touch it through the screen 😀

That is some fascinating texture. The Boro patching looks so pretty and I love the embroidered alchemical symbol

I love the detail in the protection embroidery as well as your use of mending techniques to show the storied past of Red Riding Hood! Your interpretation of who she would be all grown up is so cool!
