FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
The White Rabbit
Outline the story …
“Suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes came close by her. There was nothing too very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the rabbit say to itself, "Oh dear! oh dear! I shall be too late." This is our first introduction to the White Rabbit in Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have always very much liked the story of Alice in Wonderland, from the original Disney animated version to the 2010 Tim Burton one. So when I learned that there was to be a contest based off of literary characters, it quickly came to my mind to create the White Rabbit. This idea, combined with the realization that I had the perfect fabric for the dress, sealed it as my final idea for the competition. I originally came up with the idea for The White Rabbit in May 2020 when I first learned about the competition. I had no idea at that point how strange of a year we would all have. It seems as though more and more every day, wonderland is becoming a little bit more real. But instead of being oh so late, like the poor White Rabbit, we seem to all have time to spare. And I was determined to make the most of it.
Outline the construction…
I first heard about this competition in May 2020 and thought that over the summer, while we were quarantined for COVID, I could get the majority of it made. I greatly despise the stays that I had made for a previous outfit. I did not think that their shape was flattering or that it would look good for this outfit. So I decided to make all new undergarments. The stays are based off of the 1780s Augusta Stays pattern. I then proceeded to use the American Duchess guide to 18th century dressmaking for instructions on how to make the under petticoat, the bump pad, the over petticoat, the cap, the handkerchief, and finally, the dress. The pockets were relatively easy and fun to make. The backside of the pockets are quilted to create diamond patterns and they have individual hearts or spades hand-stitched onto the corresponding colors. The tops of the pockets are embroidered. I made about five mock ups of the dress to ensure that I knew what I was doing, and that my mock ups fit perfectly before I cut my fabric. I added chiffon trim to the cuffs and neckline of the dress, and was able to cover buttons to add to the back. The wig was also styled by myself. I bought plain white shoes at Macy’s. I was able to decorate them with some scrap fabric I had left over from the larger bows that I made for the dress.
What can I say? This is probably one of the most lovely things I’ve ever seen! The pose, the makeup, the wig, the color palette (even the pockets!), fits so perfect with this gown! Great job really!
Thank you so much! I am glad that you like it!
I was following your entry on Instagram. One of my favorites <3
Thanks! It was a so much fun to make!
This really captures the energy of the white rabbit!
Thanks so much! I tried really hard to make that happen, I’m happy that it did!
You really did well! I would never have thought of anything like this myself, yet i wouldn’t mistake this for anything else for even a minute! And i gotta say, you did really well matching up the pattern on the panels too! The bodice wraps around the body so cleanly!
Thanks! I made about six mockups, sacrificed two goats, and burned an effigy for it to come out well, but I’m very happy with the results!
I’m a huge Alice fan and adore 18th century clothes so I love everything about this. I especially enjoy the details on your pockets that you show in the video!
Thanks! I really enjoyed making all of it!
Who knew an 18th century gown would look so good with a bunny tail? Really well done, the pockets especially are exquisite.
Thanks! the tail was so fun to add, I think its one of the cutest things that I have ever added to a dress!
This is perhaps the cutest think I have ever seen, I love the ears and the little bunny tail. The fabric is just perfect! I can see how much work and love you put into that costume.
Thanks! I started it about this time last year, right as Covid was starting. It was a really long project for me, one of the longest I think I’ve ever done, but I’m very happy with the results.
oh my ! this is so cute and neat and well-made !
It fits really well. The makeup is gorgeous and really smart. The cap is G R E A T (and don’t even get me started upon the ears)
And, as a proud bunny dad, may I say, the pompon detail is the cutest thing ever. ever.
Thank you so much. I am so happy with how it came out.
This is just adorable!
Thanks!
I love everything about your entry outfit . Just brilliant!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful, creative- Wonderful Job all around!
Thanks!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
On point! Fabulous work!
Thanks!
This is so beautiful! That is indeed the perfect fabric for the white rabbit, and the silhouette is just gorgeous! I also love the pockets, so, so much, and your makeup was the perfect touch to the whole ensemble! Your video was fun to watch too! Really well done!
Thanks! I was originally going to have a mask, but it didn’t come out quite like I wanted it to, so I ended up going with makeup and I’m glad I did. As for the video I had a lot of fun making it, although, I’m not the best at editing or camera framing at the moment but hopefully with some practice I’ll get a bit better.
So cute!!
Thanks!
