Outline the story …
"Les Maîtres des Brisants" is a French space opera aimed at younger readers, and set my imagination ablaze when I was around 13.
In it, two major powers, the Empire Comtal and the Khaganat de Muspell, are on opposite sides of the checkerboard. The main goal? The control of the galaxy.
Vrânken de Xaintrailles is a popular captain working for the Empire, and the main protector of the protagonists, who are teenagers. He earned most of his reputation by navigating the Brisants, the mysterious and dangerous parts of the solar system, and his enemies call him Chien-de-la-lune because of his family crest depicting a hound howling in a crescent moon. His archenemy is called La Pieuvre, who is the Khaganat's star captain, and their identity has remained shrouded in secrecy. That is, until Vrânken defeats La Pieuvre's fleet and it is revealed that Alyss, a red-haired young woman, was his supremely talented nemesis. As brilliant minds are wont to do when they encounter one another, a romance blooms between the two. But what if they were one and the same? What if they were two sides of the same amazing coin?
I merged the two characters in an entity that is beyond gender, where strength, mischief and passion can wear many forms. This is the form they have chosen to wear, at least for now...
Outline the construction…
The shirt is entirely handsewn, with the main elements of design and construction being taken from De Garsault's L'Art du Tailleur (1760). It is made of a very fine linen, woven in a 100cm width. The body panels run selvedge to selvedge, while the sleeves are half the width (50cm). All of the seams are backstitched, pressed open and finished by turning and felling; only the side seams are left open as they are selvedges. The seam allowance throughout is around 5mm.
A modern sensibility made me decide against pleating the sleeves, neither at the shoulder nor at the cuff; and the length of the shirt falls just above the hip line. The trousers are an original design, patterned off a self-drafted sloper (my very first drafting!), they are a mix of Western and Eastern influences, as well as a mix of masculine and feminine aesthetics. The fabric is a wool-cashmere suiting, lined at the waistband, pockets and cuff with glazed cotton, and interlined at the waistband and cuffs with linen duck canvas. The ribbons at the cuff are double-faced cotton satin and the fly closes with hooks and bars.
The main construction seams are machined with silk thread, and the finishings are handsewn using the same thread. The seams are finished with a Hong-Kong finish using black silk satin bias. The articles and recordings of previous calls were all of tremendous help during the whole process.
Wonderful fit and construction!

Thank you so much 🙂
I love the androgynous look you created, and the story sounds really interesting! I will have to look into it! The ribbons around the ankles are a very nice detail, well done!
Thank you very much!
Adrien, I love this every time I see it. I still get romance novel cover vibes but some of your posing makes me think of corsairs in ballet. You achieved impeccable fit and your construction is beautiful… Well done!
Thanks a lot Maeri 🙂
