The Blackberry Fairy
Outline the story …
When I was a child my Mum bought me a book called "FLOWERS FAIRIES OF THE AUTUMN" by Cicely Mary Barker. I would spend hours looking at the illustrations and reading the poems, imagining myself as a fairy. In the fields behind our house (back when we lived in England) I would go berry picking with my brother. We would come home with buckets filled with blackberries and raspberries and my Mum would make them into jams, jellies and rødgrød, a danish pudding which my brother and I loved. When it came to choosing a character the choice was easy, the blackberry fairy has always been my favourite, because like myself he is very mischievous.
Outline the construction…
I wanted to use natural materials for my entry so it is made in wool, silk and linen. The hat is pattern Burda 8127 I made a mock up and adjusted it to fit me, I then cut it out in wool, sewed the two seams on the top of the hat and embroidered blackberries, leaves and flowers on the back. For the lining, I started by dying the silk with blackberries, water and salt, I added the silk and left it to soak overnight.
The next day I rinsed the silk out and gently washed it. Next I draped it inside the hat pinning and cutting it as I went and sewed it in with small stitches, I turned the front edge of the hat in as I still found it to be too far down my forehead.
For the dress I used pattern Burda 7115 for the bodice which I altered the neckline on, giving it a slit at center front and a self drafted skirt and patch pockets. After sewing the bodice together I gathered the skirt, added patch pockets, hemmed and dyed it using natural black dye as the original linen was white. Finally I sewed a back stitch around the pockets with embroidery thread. For the vest I used a self draft pattern. After making a mock up, I cut it out in wool, I sewed the back seam together and turned the edges back by hand, adding embroidery thread on the neckline for stability.
Love the cut and embroidery!
