Outline the story …

"[The spirit] was clothed in one simple deep green robe, or mantle, bordered with white fur... and on its head it wore no other covering than a holly wreath, set here and there with shining icicles..." (Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol"). When I hear someone mention this classic Christmas tale, this costume immediately jumps into my mind. Something about the deep green offset by the white trim just draws me to it. I've always wanted to make this robe, so when I found out the FR Competition theme was literary, I knew this was my chance! (And yes, it was COLD taking the pictures!)

Outline the construction…

The robe is constructed from dark green polyester velvet and a lighter-green polyester satin lining with a white faux fur trim. I used hand-sewing techniques (running stitch, back stitch, felling stitch, and whip stitch) for the entire robe (I actually don't own a sewing machine). I used the "Hibiscus Robe" pattern from Mood Fabrics (a free-to-download pdf file). The biggest obstacle was working with the fur trim, specifically applying a straight-grain textile to the curved edge of the sleeve ruffles (what I've affectionately termed "18th century ruffles on steroids"). With some finagling, I was able to apply the trim with very little "bunching", which once the robe is on is hardly noticeable. This was also my first time working with such a heavy fabric and a "modern" pattern (my past work has all been historical or vintage). Along with using the blog post meant to accompany the pattern, I also used YouTube tutorials for help applying the fur trim. However, as is my usual way, I took the pattern and tweaked it to fit my idea of what the robe should look like. The holly wreath was made using an old dance tiara as a base and attaching fake holly using floral tape. I then used some icicle ornaments to hang on the sides to frame my face. The belt is simply satin ribbon and the "rusted scabbard" belongs to my husband.
