Outline the story …

For my entry, I decided to design an original outfit for Mannon Blackbeak from "The Throne of Glass" book series by Sarah J. Mass, most specifically a look for when she becomes the Queen of Witches (hence the title). I began compiling my moodboard. Mannon's character in the books is first and foremost a warrior, and I wanted to make sure that the final design did not take away from that, but included a facet of becoming a Queen. I took inspiration from her original colour palette in the books, which is black and blood red. I wanted the silhouette to be simple but bold, and encompass who she is without overwhelming her. I also included a "crown made of stars", as described in the book, to compliment her regal outfit. Since Mannon's character is very active, I decided the best way to convey this would be with separates that combine together to create one silhouette.

Outline the construction…

For Mannon, I decided to drape the pattern so that the fit of it flowed together really nicely, and each piece fit well with the other. I already knew going into this that using dupioni, tulle and chiffon would be fun, but what's life without a little challenge? Once I had draped the pattern, I copied it onto paper making any necessary alterations, and then used more cotton to flatline the dupioni. By treating it as one layer for strength, the corseted black gown had some structure. Living in a small village without access to a haberdashery also gave me its own challenges when it came to finding a material stiff enough for the shoulder details. Luckily enough, through experimenting with Worbla, I knew that it could possibly be an alternative to canvas, and it worked better than I thought it would.

Beautiful! I love how you kept a Warrior feel with the bodice while still keeping a bit of femininity as queen. Well done!
