Princess and the Pea
Outline the story …
Hans Christian Anderson published this folk tale, "Princess and the Pea", in 1835. The tale is of a Prince who can not find his ideal Princess wife. His mother takes in a young girl from the bad weather and when the young girl declared she was a Princess, the mother put her to the test by putting a pea under the multiple mattresses and feather down comforters to see if she was sensitive enough to feel the pea. In the morning, the young girl declares that she had a terrible night's sleep. The Prince was delighted and they were married. When I was little I always had a hard time sleeping and my mom would say the I was like the Princess and the Pea.
Outline the construction…
I used the Workwomen's guide to create a sleeping cap and square pattern nightdress. Both items are constructed from muslin. The gown has Swiss embroidered eyelet at the neck and cuffs. A few buttons close the front and a tie is run through the neck casing. The sleeping cap is made of the same muslin with cotton lace drawn up by the gathering runner and hand applied to the edge of the cap.
I was smiling all the time while reading the story, it reminded me of the book I had on it in my childhood. This cap and nightdress look elegant and comfy! And the candleholder on the last photo gives a fairytale atmoshpere to the look. Congratulations on your entry!
