“Plane tree” happy me fairy
Outline the story …
I have loved plants all my life and of course Cicely Mary Barker’s lovely poems just open the mind to thinking about the hidden creatures that embody their favorite; most specific and special plant. The plane tree doesn’t dwell around the beautiful lakes and streams of the valley or mountain, but gives a welcoming smile to those who want an escape from the cement and concrete world. Barker’s vision of the "Plane Tree" is of a male but I have always pictured myself a happy little fairy huddling in the protected leafs of the Plane Tree. And the fall colors of the leaves and prickly seed pods , just spread smiles of yellow, brown, and bronzed green.
Outline the construction…
I have used a simplicity pattern of an Amy Brown fairy for many basic costume constructions before, I decided to give it my more unique touch and change up the leaves and boning placements. The majority of the skirt and corset-bodice top are printed cotton with some additions of sateen for a more organic leaf look. Plus some wood buttons to fasten the front. Each leaf was cut out and zigzagged together separately. With 5 different layers. For the front of the bodice to be open, I placed the boning in the front leaf separately for better structure and to keep the bodice centered.
Oh I am in love with how, in lack of better words, organic this all looks! I’m really weak for this style of costuming
JOY, just joy all around. Great job!
The texture of your leaves really evokes the shaggy/spiky leaves of the plane tree, great work. And how lovely to imagine the little fairies of the plane tree looking down on a city street!
So many details on this piece! Great job!
What fun this is! And a great interpretation of your character. Nicely done!
You really look like a fairy in that costume! It’s very lovely. I love it!
So cute! Nicely done!
Fantastic! It all goes together so well, everything perfectly compliments everything else.
Such a whimsical outfit! I adore the leaf effect of the skirt and the warm colour palette, it definitely creates an image of a playful, good-natured fairy, full of joy and vivacity! Well done!
Squeals of delight!! (clapping and jumping up and down) How fun and lovely this is! The leaves are something I’ve always wanted to try making as well, and I LOVE how this turned out for you! Excellent magical work!
