Older Edna from The Awakening
Outline the story …
Edna Pontellier, from "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, a young wife and mother, married to an older man, feels trapped in her circumstances and has an affair, in a time when such an act is almost unheard of. I chose her because I have loved the story since I found it as a young woman, and I wanted to create some items for historybounding from the 1890s. I was inspired by Bernadette Banner, and Ruth Goodman, in different ways. Ruth delighted me with watching her programs, reminding me that I know how to do so many things, and Bernadette with the notion of creating wearable garments that take inspiration from the past.
Outline the construction…
The oldest item in my outfit was the shawl, knitted several years ago from wool I scoured, carded, spun and knit, right down to the glass leaves. The skirt was next, of wool and polished cotton I bought at the thrift shops, from a pattern I drafted from the Keystone Guide. It went together nicely. The belt was self-drafted, of cotton velveteen and upholstery fabric. Fitting that has been a challenge. It is set up to fit without the corset, and supposedly with, but it won't close, so more adjustment is needed. There's a bustle pad, from the Black Snail pattern, under, which I did not show. The hat I created from scratch, with a wire frame, covered in the blue wool and some silk habotai, decorated with silk flowers and ribbon I had in my stash. I wore this with a black satin skirt as a petticoat, a white blouse that visually worked, over a long sleeve tee, which served as my chemise as I have not yet completed that. Long seams were sewn on machine, while all finishing was done by hand, using cotton and silk threads. The skirt is hemmed with grosgrain facing, and the waist is grosgrain, with three hooks and eyes. There is a voluminous pocket in the right rear of the skirt.
Excellent pieces for history bounding.
Exactly my plan, actually!
This silhouette looks so good on you! And the tiny details are really satisfying, well done♡
