Outline the story …

For the prompt, I chose Nienna, from The Silmarillion. In the book, she is associated with grief and compassion, which seemed fitting for 2020 as a whole. Very little of her appearance is described in the book aside from her wearing a grey hood, so I had the idea that she may have dressed more simply than the other Valar. I added teardrop beads around the face on account of the association with mourning.

Outline the construction…

The coat is made from a slightly altered version of Butterick pattern 6844, and is made of jacquard fabric removed from several sets of curtains. All of the seams are bound in bias tape, the pleats in the back are anchored by arrowhead tacks, and some beads were sewn into the edge of the hood after the coat was finished. This is the first time I've had to attach sleeves to anything, and it was difficult getting the markings to line up. The other challenge was getting the seams finished properly, I hadn't realized that the fabric I was using would unravel so badly around the edges. This website, as well as a few slightly panicked google searches were the main resources that helped me construct this.

This looks great ! I think the fabric is very well chosen for the character (and really beautiful), and the little tear drops around the hood is a brilliant idea ! Great work, really !!

I like how the teardrop beads help the hood sort of dip towards each drop. And your arrowhead tacks anchoring the back pleats are a nice touch.

The way the fullness at the back falls is very graceful, and the overall effect is lovely!
