Outline the story …

The character that my outfit is based on is Nadya Lapteva from the book "Wicked Saints". This book takes place in a Russian-inspired fantasy world, where Nadya, a cleric, is the main character. For the dress, I was inspired by traditional Slavic costumes, as that is as much of the art the series is based on. From that, I took the silhouette of the dress as well as the trim and its placement. The second part of the outfit was the cloak, as it is winter throughout most of the book. For this, I was inspired by another article of clothing from Russian history, the Imperial court dress. While I am aware that those are from very different time periods, the book, like much YA fantasy, does not choose a specific era to draw from. The fact that it is Russian inspired is noted from the language, and court names (tsar, etc.). From this, I took the look of the sleeves, neckline, and train. The fabric was chosen because of its connection to the overall aesthetic, not only of the world but also the physical book.

Outline the construction…

To begin, I drafted a pattern for the dress, sewed it together, then cut parts out to add the insertion lace. I sewed the pieces of the lace, which were originally a ribbon, together by hand before inserting them into the dress with the machine. I then added on the trim, also by machine. There is a white lining beneath the bodice of the dress. I found inserting the lace quite tricky but managed to mostly figure it out. I also had some trouble matching the lengths at the bottom of the skirt.

For the cloak, I took an older cloak of mine and altered it on the dress form in order to get a pattern. Then I cut out the new fabric and sewed it together. I double folded the hems because the fabric frayed a lot. Then I added the clasps at the centre front by sewing by hand before adding the pleat and another little clasp to hold the belt up. The pleat wasn't a part of the original plan, but the fabric didn't hang as nicely as I wanted so I had to improvise.
