Outline the story …
The idea was to encapsulate "The Picture of Dorian Gray" into one outfit, which was inspired by 1890s fashion when the book was written. The outfit is high class and refined, but on the skirt is an applique frame, decaying on the inside like the portrait of Dorian aging. I used largely dark colors to capture the dark and ominous vibe of the story. The corset was inspired by a handful of extant garments in the Symington collection but with my own personal touches, like the velvet, to give it the more whimsical, yet creepy feel I was going for.
Outline the construction…
This was my first time drafting a corset pattern, I referenced and adapted a couple different corsets in the Symington collection for silhouette. I used coutil for the body then all of the boning channels and binding were done using velvet ribbon, hand appliqued on. Th skirt was drafted with instruction from the Keystone Guide to Jacket and Dress cutting, and made with a cotton fabric and tarlatan lining. Most of the bulk of construction was done using a sewing machine but all of the detail work, top stitching, and applique was done by hand.
Putting that frame on the skirt with the decaying outfit, what a stroke of genius!
