Outline the story …

My inspiration for this piece actually comes from my close friends. They have often told me that I have two moods. One is my queenly southern vampire with a hint of an Irish accent. The other mood I have been told I have is my ditzy childish fae. I decided that I wanted to create something (this piece) to show who I am and what people often see when they look at me. I used to be afraid what other people think of me but as I have gotten older I have started to care less and less.

Growing up and still today, I wrote plays and songs. I am frequently creating characters in my imagination. So my piece is a collaboration of a vampire and fairy. The vampire is represented by all old jewelry that I took apart and sewed on both the skirt and shirt. I will admit that a lot of those pieces I did have to glue on. The Fae is represented by the flowers, butterflies, wings, ears and the crown. The cape is my creation. I have made a second cape for this piece but I like this one better.

I think this piece relates to the theme because all of us need a world to escape to or a character to be when we aren't strong - something to get us through life.

Outline the construction…

The skirt fits perfectly but the shirt fits well. The sleeves are a little tight but comfortable. I made many mock ups of the shirt as I tried different styles. I finally settled on this one and it fits nice and looks good on me. The shirt is from a book pattern that I drafted at the library and mocked up. The pattern as it was turned out to be small on me. I added fabric to make it fit and I adjusted the pattern as well. I stitched everything up with my sewing machine. I hand sewed the buttons and button holes. The fake flowers are hand sewn on.

I love how you combined two personal elements into your design, I feel like most can relate to having two or more juxtaposed selves, even if might not make sense.

Who said we were supposed to make any sense? lol. I’m personally ok with being called weird or crazy every so often.

I really relate to the duality and I love the little seashells – they must have taken forever to put on.

So the seashells are a chain that I got off of Amazon. I tried to sew them on and it wasn’t working so I tried gluing them down and that seems w be working. They aren’t fun to work with.

I really relate to what you said “…All of us need a world to escape to or a character to be when we aren’t strong – something to get us through life.”

Thank you . It was a lot of work I’m happy it’s done. I love disappearing into my imagination .its a safe space for me when I get overwhelmed.

I love how 3D the decorative elements of your piece are! It really brings out the nature reclamation aspect of both vampires and faeries.

A vampire and a fea looking at fabrics, patterns and accessories, trying out different mock ups and what a wonderful entry you have created, honoring both sides. Beautifully shiny and natural at the same time

Your costume made me so incredibly nostalgic for my first attempts at sewing. Though, my attempts were significantly less polished… or even finished. I love this so much. Thank you for making this.
