FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
Adele’s Mary Poppins
Outline the story …
Entry inspired by Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers. I made this costume in 2019 and it originally began as a Missy (Doctor Who) cosplay whose character design is heavily inspired by Mary Poppins. I didn't already join Foundation Revealed but I was already fascinated by historical clothing, so I was determined to make it with a proper silhouette for the era. So little by little it became a Mary Poppins costume because she was my primary inspiration and base for the era. My goal was recreating the look of an early XX century walking suit, like what I imagine Mary was wearing when she descended from the sky with her umbrella.
Outline the construction…
I started with the corset and it was my first corset ever and I used the free underbust tutorial on FR. I had to modify it quite a bit because of my shape, and it ended up a bit too big but I'm proud of it. I made it in aida cloth because I wanted it breathable, cotton twill for the boning channel and binding. I used the mock ups of the skirt and shirt as a petticoat and chemise (I purposely made the mock up longer and took out the sleeves). I made the shirt by modifying a modern button up shirt: I changed the position of the shoulder seam, modified the shape of the collar, puffed the sleeves and separated the bodice to make an upper yoke (V shaped in the back) with a gathered bodice. The shirt fabric is technically a viscose lining fabric, but it was the only fine striped fabric I found. The outerwear is a Butterick pattern (am not confident enough to draft my own coat), I wasn't going for historical accuracy so I used acrylic instead of wool fabric and the construction is pretty modern (serged edges, zip, faux opening on the sleeves, adhesive interlining).
LOL LOOOOOOOVVVEEE Its my favorite childhood story!! You did a great job!
Thank you! <3 Hearing this from such a talented person makes me feel both humble and proud, thank you very much
Fantastic suit! I love the color – excellent work.
Thank you very much!
Love to see it! Fabulous rendition of this amazing character ! Gorgeous work
Oh my, thank you!
I think you did an amazing job, even without the title I could guess who you were impersonating! I especially love how you have sewn the sleeves, doesn’t look easy to do and it’s been so neatly done! All the best for the competition!
Wow thank you! Setting the sleeves was kinda difficult because the fabric is thick and there are many layers (sleeve, bodice, and half moon shaped sleeve support) which are ruffled and/or have matching seams ahahah I still don’t know how my machine handled it
This turned out amazing! You could be either Mary Poppins or Missy just by changing the accessories, and be easily recognizable. The fit is spot on and looks incredible!
Yeah I love how versatile it turned out. I actually gained a bit of weight (thanks lockdown) and it is a bit tigh but it is such an armor that it doesn’t show too much ahahah Thank you very much!!
This looks like soooo much work! It is absolutely wonderful. I’ll watch out for you flying by 🙂
Thank you!!!
Your entry fills my heart with delight! Truly great work!
