FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
Marilla in the morning
Outline the story …
My mother collected Folkwear patterns, and as a girl I dreamed of this dress. Upon discovering dear Cathy Hay on youtube I decided that the only thing holding me back from making this dream dress was myself. One vintage singer collecting dust on the back porch of a forgotten antique store and a bedroom reorganization later (and a few moments crumpled on the floor wailing because I cut 2 right sides of the skirt and couldn't buy more fabric) she is everything I had hoped she would be. Marilla (of "Anne of Green Gables") and I are both rather no nonsense ladies, so I wanted something practical (dark) but also pretty.
Outline the construction…
I am blessed to live near an amazing fabric store which has stayed open through the pandemic. I spent an entire day there pouring over fabric. My mother is in possession of a button collection started by the women of my family in the 1800s. I spent hours as a child sorting them, marvelling over the beautiful tiny victors from the past. She was so excited about my project that she allowed me to include some on my dress. The pattern (Folkwear 208) was very easy to work with and went together perfectly. I DID chicken out about the button holes. I cheated and just sewed them on because I was to afraid to ruin it with shoddy button holes.
I love this! Marilla is my favorite and you have captured her style perfectly here!
I do also love this! 🙂 And the name is a big plus! Very good for an entry level!
Nice result! you can be proud of yourself
Love the pattern, and the fabric. Good job!
Great choice. Brilliant calico dress. Very Marilla.
I love this! I also had Marilla on in my mind for this competition. You have captured such a nuanced character so well. Great job!
I like the single button. In german we say “Das Tüpfelchen auf dem i” – that little detail, that makes it perfect.
Very well done! You should be proud of yourself sewing your dream dress, and you sewing machine “rescue” too.
The strip of lace at the bottom of the skirt is extremely well placed. I don’t know if that was in the pattern or not, but it looks so good and adds the perfect complement to the skirt. Well done 👏🏼👏🏼
Congratulations on making your wish come true! I love everything about this – the story and the finished dress.
You did a wonderful job with this dress! It looks exactly like something Marilla would wear. And those buttons are amazing! That is so cool that your mother let you use some from her collection!
This is such a cute dress! Those buttons! Well done!
This is wonderful! I love this dress! So well done, thank you!
The choice of fabric and pattern are perfect for Marilla! You did a great job embodying the character in this outfit and the antique button is just the icing! Beautiful work!
Ooops, I meant to say, the button is the icing on the cake!
I love this take on Marilla! She is such a lovely literary character and I believe you captured her perfectly!
This dress is amazing!
Brilliant! I love the story of the buttons and the memories as child – I also loved sorting things. The result is awesome and dare I say that I’d even wear it inside out! I love the raw nature which looks like a deconstructed style garment on its own! 🙂
