Magrat Galrick’s Causal Outfit
Outline the story …
I began this outfit by binge listening to all the Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett audiobooks where Magrat Garlick appeared in. This allowed me to get a good understanding of her character so I could express this in the outfit. I wanted to stay away from the usual way Magrat is designed, this being a loose fitted simple green dress, and instead create something similar to what her fellow witches (Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax) would wear, but was different enough so she could still be called a "wet hen". To achieve this I decided to design a dress that took inspiration from medieval dresses and modern cottagecore dresses, and blend the two together.
I designed a simple, yet full and flouncy underdress, and a green over dress with 4 pockets (2 in the side seams and two hidden in the sleeves), as Magrat is described as being surprisingly practical. I wanted to incorporate Magrat being described as having flowers in her hair into her hat, which though she rarely wore in the books, it was stated it was important she has on. Finally as I didn't have time to handmake all the occult jewellery Magrat wears, I incorporated the occult into her belt, with a goats skull design as a nod to Pan. Adding the note "died from natural causes" as I thought though Magrat would like the occult symbolism, her having strong vegetarian beliefs, she probably would want to make it clear she didn't endorse goat murder
Outline the construction…
The bodice of the underdress was entirely hand sewn with back stitches and the seams were closed with a French seam. The underdresses skirt however was machine sewn due to time constraints. I ended up running into an issue here when I ran out of fabric to complete the ruffles; to make up for this, I sewed together all the scraps I could find, and shortened the skirt length so there was less fabric needed. The green cotton-wool mix outer dress was mainly machine sewn except for the neckline which was finished with a hem stitch, making sure to put interfacing where the button holes were to make it stiff. The hat had firm inner layer of canvas and interfacing to make it able to stay upright; this was covered by black poly-cotton, and then decorated with a ribbon flower and polymer clay mushrooms I made. Finally the belt was boned where all the canvas seams were to maintain its position, this inner layer was then covered by tweed wool. All the clothes were patterned by me, for better or worse.
This is gorgeous, and so perfect for the character! I love the shape of the hat, and the detail on the belt is perfect!
Cuuuute!!! I am in love with the ruffles on the bottom and the colors you chose!
This look is so cute and is very flattering on you! Love the colors and the tiny details. Plus ruffled skirts are my favorites❤
What a great look! I love how you chose to incorporate elements of the character into the outfit. I’m not familiar with this series, and the more I hear it mentioned and see different people’s interpretations of the characters, the more I’m determined to go find it! I’m sure I will have your vision front of mind as I read.
Well done! You did a lovely job of bringing Magrat to life.
Witchy and beautiful: awesome work!
Extra pockets, that sounds exactly like something Magrat would like. I love your characterisation of her, she looks witchy but not like the other witches. Very well done!
Perfect Magrat.
I love this! It’s really very well done! Thank you!
I really love your interpretation of the character, and the details of the painted belt and the little clay mushrooms on the hat! So cute! Also, I would totally wear that dress, not even as a costume, I adore it! It’s a really great outfit, well done! Best wishes from the other Magrat 😉
