Lady Loki
Outline the story …
I was inspired by the Lady Loki in the "Dinner with Doom" short story in the Marvel graphic novel "Dark Reign: The Cabal", an ambitious and ruthless villain, trickster, shape-shifter and god(dess) who would do anything to rule Asgard. Their green outfit is also my favourite colour, one I associate with magic, power and tricky snakes.
For my design, I gave Lady Loki more than just ambition and spite as motives for their actions: a family. I brought the Marvel Lady Loki closer to the historical Norse roots of the character as the parent of "monsters": Hel (Goddess of Death), Fenrir the wolf, Jörmungandr(The World Serpent) and Sleipnir (the eight-legged horse). However, I envisioned them just before they became a villain and were a mischievous but loving parent. They’re proudly wearing symbols of their children, like the Ouroboros crown and the fur and chains of the cape, to remind Asgard that they are not happy with how the children were treated and that ultimately, they will get their revenge.
While I kept the colour scheme with green and gold, in my rendition Lady Loki is a warrior parent, welcoming up to a point but ready to defend at any given moment. If angered, this trickster can turn into a villain in a second for revenge. To show this, I combined a long dark-green skirt and cape, with gold stays/armour, pleather arm bracers, wearing a chainmail necklace with an Ouroboros crown and had Lady Loki flaunt a stolen golden apple.
Outline the construction…
Making Lady Loki has been a journey full of first steps that taught me new skills. I designed my first costume, draped a cape and a pair of arm bracers, and used pleather for the first time in making a skirt and my first pair of stays. I even learnt to make chainmail and a crown to add the final touches.
As a starting point, I used the patterns Butterick B4254 variant A for the stays and the underskirt from B4827, but altered them multiple times until they were just right.
I made the stays out of 2 layers of cotton canvas, one of pleather, and the cotton lining, while adjusting the bust and waist for a better fit. Everything but the boning channels, the placement of which I changed in the final version, I sewed by hand—including the 40 eyelets. I individually hand-stitched the pieces for the lining for the skirts and body of the stays too.
For the skirt with golden hem, to be able to access 18c. inspired pockets, after resizing it, I split the waistband and made the overlapping closures at the side fronts.
I constantly experimented with the reversible cape and the arm bracers by draping and trying different designs until they were perfect, as I couldn't pin them in place and had to get creative. The arm bracers have leafy decorative stitching done by machine and 40 hand-sewn eyelets with hooks and eyes at wrists and inner elbows for more security.

I love the idea of Loki as a loving parent who will avenge their children. And look fabulous while doing so… The inclusion of historical elements from the mythology adds depth to the character and costume.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed my interpretation of the character! I loved every second of coming up with the design and making the costume and I am hoping to add some other pieces to Loki’s wardrobe in the future just because I love the character so much.
The whole outfit is wonderful and the colours are wonderful and very fitting for Loki. I really like the golden hem on the green cape and dress.

I love this outfit so much! Your stays are absolutely stunning! The shape is beautiful and they look so well finished, I adore them! Also the gold and dark green compliment each other so well, I love how you added the gold of the stays into the trim on the skirt and cloak, and even made awesome accessories like the arm bands and chain mail too! I appreciate the amazing amount of work that went into this, so, so well done!
This is so cool!
I love everything about it!! Long live the Trickster!
