Galaxies out the window
Outline the story …
For humans to step into another world they would have to travel to another planet through space. The inspiration for the outfit is the galaxies that they might see on the way. I wanted a big black skirt that could be decorated to look like images of galaxies from the Hubble space telescope . The Hubble images with the blues and reds were chosen because this telescope detects mostly from the visible light section of the electromagnetic spectrum, which human eyes can also see . I decided on a gathered overskirt for a voluminous, Cinderella-style skirt over an underskirt with multiple layers pleated to save some bulk at the waist.
My mother always made me clothes from commercial patters and adjusted clothes to fit me better, and tried to teach me how to do the same when I was younger. I did what she taught me, but I could never get the clothes to fit as comfortably as I wanted them to because my body is shaped so differently from those whom patterns are made for, so I didn’t do much sewing. Last year I decided that I deserve clothes that fit better and to try and make my own patterns from scratch. I’ve mostly made skirts and one dress from a self-drafted body block. For this project I wanted a structured bodice with vertical panels to support the skirts and decided to try draping for the first time.
Outline the construction…
The bodice panel patterns were made by draping one piece after another on my body and making mock-ups out of calico and the final fabric. Every piece is unique due to my asymmetrical body. The straps flowing into a front and back panel without seams are a personal point of pride. The pieces of sturdy light blue cotton dyed a warmer blue were cut, hand basted, and sewn together by machine. The inside seams were whip stitched. The seam allowances of the neckline and armscyes were folded over and basted down with running stiches that were covered with black silk ribbon whip stitched on by hand.
All the skirts were made by sewing pieces of black cotton voile together selvage to selvage by machine with French seams. The three layers of the underskirt were each pleated onto strips of cotton twill tape sewn together. For the overskirt, I used bleach in a sink and a spray bottle to lighten patches of the fabric with the spattered effect that I coloured using combinations of red, blue, and pink fabric dye. The ‘stars’ in and around the galaxies, like the double spiral, are glass beads sewn on individually by hand. For the waistband, the fabric was gathered using two rows of machine gathering stitches and sewn by hand to a strip of twill tape. A strip of voile was sewn to the back of the tape, folded over the gathered edges, and whip stitched down on the bottom row of gathering stitches.
The way you’ve made the galaxies and textured them with the beading is marvellous, I feel like I’m falling into space when you twirl. Absolutely wonderful work.
I am so, so impressed with your work on this entry. You achieved an incredible fit (especially considering the challenges that asymmetry create in developing patterns) and I loved reading about how you created the skirt fabric (from scratch!!). Well done <3
The color of the skirt turned out amazing!
This is such a spectacular entry! You’ve achieved a wonderful fit on the bodice and the skirt fabric is incredibly done!
Gorgeous colours and a beautiful dress!
