Outline the story …
Flora MacIvor is a female character in Walter Scott’s Waverley, which was this first work of historical fiction published in English (in 1814). She represents the Jacobite female heroine. The only description Scott offers of her is that she dresses in all the latest Parisian fashions with Highland practicality, she wore her hair in ringlets and had a diamond encrusted circlet.
Outline the construction…
I made the following in 18 days:
stays (resized from baumvgarten and watsons costume close up)
shift
bum roll
hoops (Patterns of Fashion 5, p145)
robe a l’anglaise (from Waugh’s CoWF, p75)
stomacher (with Liz help on the embroidery)
linen petticoat
silk petticoat
anglaise
All of the above were entirely sewn by hand, except for the anglaise which also has some basic machine embroidery
