Outline the story …

Grograman, the Many-Coloured Death. He is the juxtaposition between the Goab Desert and Perilin, the Night Forest. Wherever he walks, death and multicoloured sand follow. Nothing can live in his presence. As the day ends and the sun sets, he dies and turns to stone. Only to allow Perilin, The Night Forest to flourish. This forest is beautiful and fast-growing, and is a threat that could overtake all of Fantastica! It's only Grogramans awakening that stops the torrential growth of Perilin. When I first read this in "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende, I thought the concept of Grograman and his constant, unwilling, and unknowing strive for homeostasis was beautiful, sad, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I juggled a few other ideas for this entry but always came back to Grograman. The colours and basic design have roughly kept their shape throughout the whole process and have simultaneously changed with each step. Grograman would always consist of flowy colours, fur, and a corset. The corset changed from a cage corset (to signify the stone he would become) to a brown underbust corset. The stone took shape in the front of the black dress as two pillars to represent his paws that Sabastian slept between. The multi-coloured flowers on the back of the black dress are for Perilin. The gold, flowy skirt and the teal/pink poncho are the Goab Desert. They’re kept loose and flowing like the sands of a desert, particularly one that changes colours with each step!

Outline the construction…

I’ve only made one other corset before and it was less than a year ago. I started this project with the corset and it was meant to be a cage corset, which I bought from Corsets by Caroline. I tried and got distracted. I tried again, only to find I’ve lost a few pattern pieces and inches around my waist! Thanks to AraneaBlack for a quick save with her brilliant and easy to produce Lolita pattern! The only other garment I used a pattern with was the pink and teal poncho. I used a sketched pattern I found on Pinterest and made a miniature mockup for it (after crowdsourcing help for its construction! Thanks again, Stitchlings!) The black dress I draped completely! This is a miracle as my mannequin is multiple sizes larger than I am and I started draping with an entirely different design in mind. The skirt to the black dress had been finished at least 3 times. I rushed through its construction as anxiety and time were creeping up on me. The waist and gatherings at the back were patient zero of my troubles. Something so incredibly easy caused me days of quality time with red wine and a seam ripper. I’ve also never worked with Georgette, which is what the black dress and teal/pink poncho are made of. For the corset, I used double-sided interfacing to secure the faux suede to the calico, and also used it to make stitchless boning channels!

The Neverending Story is one of my favourites and I must say that you did it justice. Costume is beautifull, creative and well executed. I love it!

I love the thought that went into each piece of this design, I’ve never read the book before, but your description of it was so evocative that you made me want to read it! I particularly love the pink and teal cape, I can definitely imagine that it is multicoloured desert sand flying out behind you! Well done on this thoughtful and creative interpretation of your character!
