Desert Rose
Outline the story …
At university I had a roommate who hated nature. "Pour concrete everywhere" was her motto, simply because she didn't like how nature slowly takes ownership of everything humans build but don't maintain. I was shocked. I love nature, and its perseverance is an inspiration to me. It might not keep its appearance as we know it, and become less friendly to us humans, but it will always prevail, showing beauty in a different way.
After last years drought I wanted to point out nature's beauty that might be less obvious. No flowers, no colors, but dry, broken soil, evolving into a desert rose.
Outline the construction…
I started out with the pattern of the "Black Corset with Blue Flossing" from Jill Salen's Corsets, but altering it to my less than perfect body required quite a bit of adjustment, especially on the bust gussets. I chose the pattern for its relatively small number of pieces, so I have "space" for the broken soil design. The boning channels were supposed to act like break lines of the dry soil, so I didn't want them to be too wide. That's why I sewed the casing to the seam allowance on the inside and only covered the seam lines on the outside with bias tapes. It is boned with spiral steel all the way around except for the back which has flat steel on both sides of the eyelets.
I used one to three layers of black tulle to add depth to the color.
Beautiful concept. I love the subtil changes in colour, it gives such depth to the design.
