Crowley Sauntering Through 1760
Outline the story …
"Crowley had dark hair and good cheekbones and he was wearing snakeskin shoes."
Crowley, the demon depicted in "Good Omens", didn't mean to fall. They... sauntered vaguely downwards.
I wanted to make a period-construction accurate 1760s gown for them that would show as much refined wealth as the Bentley they drive in later eras. The tucker's lace reminds us of wings while the embossed snake trim across the stomacher hints at the origin of the wearer.
Outline the construction…
The gown is 100% hand sewn worsted wool over a linen lining.
The worsted actually was fairly fray-tastic, which posed some small challenges in construction. However, it was my first time free-handing the back of an English gown (rather than using a template), and my first time hand sewing a gown in wool. Threads were all silk. I just had to use black lace for Crowley.
I made some really extravagant sleeve ruffles, but it got too cold outside to do a photo shoot with my photographer (not in my pod), and on the mannequin the ruffles looked like a bunch of plastic bags. So that lovely detail will have to wait for another day. The fit is better about the upper back on me: the mannequin is just a little slimmer than I am in the upper back and that impacts the fit here.
This i all handsewn??? that’s amazing!
Thank you.
Beautiful lines! Wonderful incorporation of snakeskin as the trim.
Thank you.
Look at all that amazing hand stitching! <3 Can't wait to see you wearing this in person. Brava!
I can’t wait to wear it with you. It packs well.
Your handstitching looks very neat! And those materials together are great♡
Thank you.
This looks fantastic, so awesome to see another good omens inspired dress. All the tiny hand stitches…your fingers must’ve been sore.
Nope, my fingers are fine. I wore much of the gold off of a gold plated thimble, though!
This looks wonderful and very fitting for Crowley. I really like the red you chose.
Thanks for your kind words!
I watched you make this as you posted on IG and I loved it but now that I know the backstory, I love it more. Less is more and the subtlety sings. As usual you are an “extra” inspiration.
Your construction looks lovely! Hopefully you and your photographer will get together soon so you can complete your vision!
