FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
Combinations Fit For An Asylum
Outline the story …
I started 2020 with the idea that I did not want to buy any more clothes. I wanted to try and make everything myself. This is the first thing I have sewn by myself since I was 8 years old. I made it hard on myself when I decided to completely hand sew these combinations. When I heard about this competition I wanted to take inspiration from "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins. Mostly because all I had to do was sew on the buttons and I needed it to fit the theme. Also, because I thought it is a story that could work very well in any time period.
Outline the construction…
Pattern used was Truly Victorian TVE02. The materials I used for the main construction was cotton lawn and cotton thread. The buttonholes and buttons were sewn with silk thread. I put off starting the hand sewing of the buttonholes because I was so afraid of messing them up. I hand sewed all the rolled hems and I sewed down all the seam allowances on the inside. The pleats on the back of the drawers were made with a small fork so they would be neat and even. All the ruffles were gathered and sewn down by hand.
I have a couple of Victorian/Edwardian combinations- your are very convincing. Congratulations.
Very neat stitching, well done!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! That makes me feel great!
Excellent attention to detail, doing the pleats and ruffles by hand!
Thank you! It took forever and I wasn’t sure that my stitching would hold all the ruffles in place. I am so glad it worked.
Nicely done! Hand sewing is so demanding and time consuming. How patient you must be. All your hard work is apparent (in a very good way), but I especially like the cut of the neckline you chose. Such a versatile and lovely result.
Thank you for commenting. It is very encouraging.
Wow, what a great start to on your handmade journey. Beautiful!
The Woman in White is my all time favourite Victorian novel, and these combinations are perfect for Anne or Laura. Very well done, indeed!
I loved reading that book and thought the combinations would work well. Thank you so much!

THank you!
Sooo, I have these combinations cut out on my table staring me in the face! Taunting me…they dare me to come sew them together. I love yours! These are really nice. I dare not hand sew a thing right now. I am in awe! Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words! Yours will be great too.
You nailed it. This combination set looks fantastic . Congratulations on your entry 🙂
Thank you so much for this it’s so encouraging.
Lovely result and your hand stitching is all worth it. And thanks for the tip: a fork to form the pleats! Why did I never think of that?
Thank you! I got the idea of using the fork from BellaMae designs on youtube.
