Coat of Night
Outline the story …
"Stardust" by Niel Gaiman - About a boy from our world finding what it means to grow up, and a star from Faerie (in the shape of a woman) who comes to terms with loving said boy even though she was knocked out of the sky. In the beginning, there's a fair in Faerie that happens every 10 years next to the village of Wall, and the hawkers selling wares mention selling a "coat of night". At the end of the book the star becomes queen with Tristran (the boy) as the king, and they wander the realm seeing all there is to see before settling down to rule. I wanted to imagine what a faerie made "coat of night" that a star would wish to wear on her travels might look like. This is my take on it and what I think it might have looked like. This particular coat is made with; two cats; breaths, a dog's wishes, a loved one's longing, and moonlight in the pockets.
Outline the construction…
The outside blue fabric is a polyester felt, the inside silver lining is made of lyocell rayon, and the cotton batting I quilted on machine. This is my first ever coat that I've made, and I patterned it from a sloper of my measurements, edited it with a mockup, and edited it more in the final materials. This is also the first time I've ever inserted a lining to have it semi free-floating and I've never done so much hand-sewing in my entire life. Both sides of the front, the bottom hem and the collar are all hand-sewn together. The fur trim is a faux-fur and the gems are rhinestones that are glued on with glow-in-the-dark glue so they glow when the lights are turned off. I ordered tailor's canvas on the second day of the competition and I still haven't gotten it, so the collar is floppy and a bit lifeless. All together I'm proud of the coat I've made, especially because it's the first, and completely made in the time from paper pattern to final product, all since the beginning of the competition through today.
A lovely coat in a beautiful colour. I hope you wear it a lot.
I’m absolutely in love with this. It makes me want to make a new coat and I -super- do not need another coat.
A twirling coat!!! Love the idea, and that color♡♡♡
This is such a beautiful coat. I love the description of the ingredients for making it from the story. The glow in the dark glue for the rhinestone stars is a good touch. It fits you so well.
Well done! The coat is a very striking color.
