Outline the story …

Autumn is my favorite season, with all the colours of the falling leaves, the scent and shapes of all the different mushrooms, the crisp air and the light fog on early mornings... I knew I had to do something with it. And I don't know why, but I had always associated hobbits with autumn. So I had to try and make myself hobbit's clothes.
I watched (again) the lord of the rings, I reread all of the books, and searched inspiration online.
I finally decided to make a white flowy shirt, a vest and a long skirt.
Then I found a embroidery pattern with golden leaves and bright mushrooms, and I remembered my grand-mother. She used an apron everyday, usually with a big central pocket, to put her handkerchief, her glasses and a coin (in case she heard a cuckoo in spring). Her favorite apron had a big mushroom printed on the pocket. I had to make one myself.

Outline the construction…

For the shirt, I used an old linen bedsheet. The most difficult part was to find a ribbon/trim for the sleeves. I found it two weeks before taking the photos.
The vest is made with fabrics I had in my stash from quite some time. I had bought them in the prospect to make a vest with them but never had the incentive to do it before the competition. The outer fabric is corduroy and the lining is a knit fabric, so I had to use another layer to give strength to the garment. I used a coton twill to make a mock-up that could then be used as the inner layer. And I found the lining too pretty to just be a lining, so I decided to make the vest reversible. I had to sew the bones on the twill layer to make that possible.
The skirt was originally made with rectangular panels, but the gathering at the vest made my hips to big, so I cut the panels in trapezoidal shapes. I used the resulting triangles to make pockets on each side of the front panel.
For the apron, I used an very old pillowcase. I had to compose with rust spots and a yellowed crease in the center. I had to learn new embroidery stitches, but I am very proud of the result. It's my favorite piece of the entire garment.
