Joaninha from “Viagens na minha terra”
Outline the story …
Joaninha is in one of the stories from the book "Viagens na Minha Terra" by Almeida Garrett (Travels in my Homeland in the English translation).
In 1834, during the civil war, Joaninha lived in an isolated house with her old, blind grandmother. She is described by the author as wearing a white dress...She would seldom leave the house and their only visit was the priest that went by the house once a week.
Outline the construction…
No decent pattern, had to go by trial and error. As Portugal has been in and out of war since 1807, I believe she wouldn't be wearing the latest fashion, she would probably still have her mother´s old dresses, so on this particular day she might be wearing one from just before the French invasions. The dress is closed on the back, with ribbons as buttons weren´t common when her mother made the dress and Joaninha´s grandmother, being blind, would have some difficulties in helping her get dressed.
Note: All required undergarments were made to give the proper silhouette.
Great research, lovely stitching, and done without a pattern. Wonderful! Best of luck x
The result is really good. Congratulation!
