Outline the story …
We were very inspired by the concept of places where we fantasize about other worlds.
Such as gazing at the clouds and loosing ourselves to the stories floating past.
Galaxies were another big contributor to the final design- the big whirlpools of space, like magical windows to other worlds. But how would it look, if a garment was a portal into another world?
Working with the natural contours of the corset, Galaxara played with the contrast between light and dark in an almost monochromatic sea of cloud and sky- later emphasized by Kitty with chunky facet beads giving texture to the clouds themselves and Rhinestones mimicking the stars behind.
The dark oil-spill rhinestones and crystals go hand in hand with the dark parts of the corset while the clear white enhance the light midsection of the corset when it catches the light.
Since this was our first collaboration, we wanted to play to our strengths. We picked a corset silhouette Kitty has made before and Galaxara came up with a few designs that would emphasize the silhouette. We went with a blue cloudy motif, that she hand painted on the naked corset. Afterwards, Kitty placed all embellishments to enhance the painting and matched the tulle layers to the shades on the corset. We went with a ruffled train tulle skirt, to mimic the clouds painted on the corset.
Outline the construction…
The corset is made from a black satin coutil. A smaller corset in the same materials was made to test the fabric paint and techniques before painting on the final piece. A lot of trial and error was needed for Galaxara to work with the viscosity of the paint on a corseted silhouette instead of the usual flat surface. She also experimented with mixing the paint with other mediums to use them in an airbrush.
Kitty used piecing for the train of the skirt which had to be made from different black fabrics from her stash, the pencil skirt in a streachy material, the train from two nonstreach cottons. The tulle ruffle-train was a first, most of the tulle needed to be attached by hand due to the volume the it creates when ruffled. Creating a gradient between the coloured tulle took some planning, but it worked in the end with a few test pieces.
The earrings are slush casted from resin and for the ring of rhinestones, Kitty used a base from a container to cut out the shape and individually glue on the stones on both top and bottom.
The hair rings are simply beads on wire attached together and set in the hair with a bobbipin.
The most interesting part was communication and keeping everything in a unison direction, we were both pleasantly surprised with how well we worked together and how we managed to challenge each other into new mediums, developing our skillsets further.
A fantastic collaboration. I love the deep night sky of the painted corset and the dramatic layered skirt. It all fits together so well.
I admire the deep plunge corsets Kitty makes, and though I have tried my hand at them myself I just cannot seem to make the plunge have enough structure without gaping. How is the plunge maintained on this corset dress?
Thank you so much, It means so much to me. I have experimented so much with this plunge and Barbara was the one to help me crack the code! I have tilted the bust part of the plunge forward from the underbust up to make it hug the bust firmly. I hope this makes sense, it’s so hard explaining in words only 🙂
I does make sense somewhat. I have tried the same a bit, but I migt not have done it enough, because my bust I way less humble than yours and I still experience “spillage”. I have also considered wirre at the plunge or some interfacing, but think I will have to work more on the pattern instead. Thank you so much for your tip.
I hope you’ll make it work, i turn mine so much down that I have to make the front in two pieces, otherwise they’ll overlap. If that can be an indicator 🙂 i also know that both corsets by caroline and others have some plunge corset patterns, maybe they’re worth giving a look to figure out how they’ve patterned it?
