The Betrayed
Outline the story …
Beginning of the year I was hit with the hardest statement by my husband telling me that he was moving out in the middle of us trying for a child through IVF. This incident triggered the idea for this piece. The best way to summarize it was: The one thing that hurts more than having sinned is being betrayed by the one you love the most.
I have always been fascinated with demons and unworldly creatures. I decided that depicting a demon that is burned and returning from the flames from the underworld. The demon is called the Betrayed, she is representation of a woman scorned by her lover and she will avenge others who have been betrayed.
Outline the construction…
Materials:
Polyester Koshibo Fabric, Wide,Drape,Versatile,Shiny,Black Red Ombre Pattern, dense mesh fabric, Rhinestone Rondelles Crystal Spacer Beads, Natural Flame Stone Beads Yooperlite Round, Smooth Garnet Red Glass Crystal, Fluorescent Fabrics Colorful Shiny Gauze Polyester Fabric, polyester horse hair
Techniques:
Draping, Pattern alteration and modification, Serging, regular sewing machine, hand hemming and understitching and ladder stitch the waist band wear I inserted the elastic, fold over sewing to stabilize horse hair, and hand beading dress
Challenges:
I attempted beading without polyester horse hair; however, without the horse hair it was weighing down and causing the dress not to flow correctly anymore and it was pulling the fabric itself. After adding the horsehair it helped stabilize the fabric and make the leg slits more workable.
The dress design is partially based off of a dress pattern on mood fabrics. I altered the dress by adding leg slits on both sides and added magnetic buttons into the straps of the dress so that I can attach demon wings without having to worry about them falling off. I also had to create extra straps that could be hidden to help hold the demon wings up.
Wow your costume really is ‘out of this world’. It is an amazing piece of art. Well done, Heidi.
You have taught me something new. I have never thought of horsehair in general sewing, as I just thought it was used as old fashioned ‘stuffing’ for upholstery. Our little pony Digby better watch out, he might be getting a tail trim sometime soon, so I can experiment. All the best to you Heidi.
I’m glad I could provide some new insight and it was all a random idea that happened to work really well.
First of all I’m so incredibly sorry your had to go through something like that, I hope you’re in a better situation now.
That said, I love your use of iridescent fabric inside your dress, it almost feels angelic to contrast. Well done, I’m happy you could chanel your hurt into your art.
Thank you very much Kitty and I have been healing, but it is hard
