The Sunshine Stays
Outline the story …
I am always intrigued by how spring suddenly emerges and how tiny are the first blossoms that will greet you on a walk through the fields. Primulas and daffodils are perhaps my favourite, because of their bright yellow sparkle in the brown bed of last year’s leaves. Another great fascination of mine is historical clothing, especially from the 18th or 19th century. When my mother sorted out this old duvet cover with a very delicate design in light yellow and white that reminded me of 18th century porcelain, it just demanded to be a pair of stays and gave me the picture of a shepherdess in the fields among spring flowers.
Outline the construction…
This was my first ever pair of stays, so I learned new things about sewing techniques, i. e. hand-sewing with linen thread that you coat with beeswax just before sewing or making eyelets. I started with the Simplicity pattern 8162 of American Duchess, and I read quite a few articles at Foundations Revealed, not only about extant examples but also about the actual construction of stays. The most extensive part were the mock-ups, because I needed three of those to not only figure out the pattern fit but also for finding my way through the maze of the making process. I chose the front lacing version and ended up by lengthening the pattern pieces a little bit. In place of the historically ever-present linen, I used cotton canvas for the interlining layers and a cotton duvet as fashion fabric. The construction took quite a while, not only because of the elaborate mock-up-process, but also because I had to try making time for the project around my already busy workdays. Hand-sewing the boning channels of the pieces separately gave me the freedom to take my project with me and work on it while commuting or taking short breaks. It took longer as expected over-all but felt not too overwhelming. For my first ever pair of stays I am quite happy with the result, because I learned so much. But as practise makes perfect, I am now eager to dive deeper into the world of corsetry.
If I had a flock of sheep, I would give them to you in an instant 🙂
Thank you, that is so kind. I would take your sheep as quickly, because… tweed.
You are as radiant as a spring flower. Great work on the stays
Such a happy and lovely pair of stays. You did a fabulous job 🙂
All right, look, don’t tell anyone, but I love Daffodils! When I was little, I would call them Daffydills! 🤣 Anyway, this is so well executed. Very nice!!
Nicely done. Yellow is such a happy color and you wear it well.
Thank you so much, for all your comments, y’all! I am so happy to be among such lovely , warm, kind-hearted and creative people!
