FOUNDATIONS REVEALED COMPETITION ENTRY
A Rainbow in the Dark
Outline the story …
Initially I wanted to do a 1920s dressed inspired by peacocks I used to see as a child, but I didn't have as much time as I thought to devote to such an endeavour. In the end, I chose to do a Christian Dior inspired mash-up. I love the dreamy nature of some Dior pieces that are also inspired my nature, and I thought I could try to capture some of that in my design. I wanted to make fabric roses cascading down the tulle skirt, but did not have as much time. I was also inspired by the dreaminess of the 1930s and wanted to make a 30s blouse that matched the vibe of the tulle skirt.
Outline the construction…
For the 1930s blouse, I used a vintage McCall's 8612 pattern from Jim Vintage Patterns, and self drafted the skirt based on watching a number of YouTube videos. It was my first time working with all the materials used in this project (except for the waistband). For the blouse I used a cotton chiffon which was a dream to sew with. I did make a few mistakes though, which resulted in some unsightly holes in the fabric that was incredibly frustrating, but I was able to shift the fibers together to make them less visible. I also tried to sew majority of the seams as French seams, except for the side with the zipper. I was really proud of the outcome of this and would make it again. On the other hand, the tulle skirt was extremely difficult for me. I learned that tulle is an incredibly difficult fabric to work with, you literally feel like you're drowning in it when sewing, but, I managed to gather each panel and sew them together into a skirt, with a cupra lining. Cupra was also great to work with and I would definitely use it again. My biggest miss was with the waistband. I tried to make an elasticated one, but in order to make the photoshoot, I had to baste it together which was sloppily done. I think later on I will change to a satin waistband instead.
So nice! I am with you on Dior! I will own a vintage Dior one day!
Thank you! I actually went to an exhibition a couple months ago and it was so breathtakingly beautiful!
The colours of the skirt are so dreamy!
