Velvet Hydrangea

Outline the story …
At first, I was thinking huge projects like a ballgown for Poison Ivy, but my mom talked me down to a smaller and more useful project. I made the mock-up but I got lost from there and I doubted I had enough one type fabric in my stash. So I went back to the drawing board and I was blank. But after a job change, a house move and a failed fertility treatment, I got back up, duck up an old mock-up and went from there. Through all that my mom and I talked more than we use to, and we share a love for Hydrangea (I have had 3 plants but I manage to kill them all, no green fingers like my mom). And that why I chose to work with Hydrangea as the nature part of my project and a reminder of my mom. I was done with the corset start November and decided to wait with the flowers until the Christmas holidays, but my body had other plans. The second fertility treatment worked, and I used December and January to throw up, so I was afraid it would not fit, but I finished the flowers and said f**k the fit at 16 weeks pregnant, and took the pictures 3 days before deadline. (A deadline is great motivation).
Outline the construction…
The construction is quite simple, a 6 paneled corset after Cathys recipe. A canvas layer as the strong one and a velvet layer as the pretty one. But when one’s challenges is sew straight or along a line, it’s not easy. I attempted topstitching to keep the seams flat on the canvas, but I sewed too far out, but once started I continued for the learning. Waist tape and boning channels is of a nylon material, but I learned that it’s a b***h to work with and afterwards learned it wasn’t recommended. The boning is zip ties, 1cm wide, and they worked just fine. I know some materials is not recommended to beginners, but I wanted to use what I had left form former projects or find in the thrift shop, because I did not need to create more leftovers or trash. Top and button is finished with pre-made biastape, machined on front but hand on back. The scarf is attached with 3 push buttons in the front and with elastic to the back with 2 buttons, it is fully removable (it took 15 min to make but it’s the part I like the most).
That’s lovely, both the garment and the way it brought you together with your mom, at a time her presence was needed. Congratulations on the pregnancy!
