Outline the story …

I had a million ideas in my mind, but I kept coming back to the idea of wheat. I live on a farm and the most magical time is when my yard is surrounded by wheat and the golden sea rolls in the wind like ocean waves. I brings me peace and happiness I could watch it for hours. I wanted to create something that reminded me of that, and the movement of a dirndl dress came to mind.

Outline the construction…

This was a very fun and challenging project. I started out using a Burda Dirndl pattern. Most patterns I come across the same problem of having an average size waist, but my bust is way too small for the waist measurements it suggests. So, after several mockups it became something unreconcilable from the original pattern. I liked it even more. Dirndls are very tight-fitting garments, and I was afraid that the tight bust would further show my boxy appearance. The ribbon and embroidery I think added to the design and made it more figure flattering and draws the eye upwards and away from what I don't like about myself. I am very happy to have this in my wardrobe for a special occasion.
I used a mix of machine and hand sewing. I rarely do embroidery, so this was a very fun challenge! The materials are all cottons the blue is a heavier weight. The lining is a quilting cotton. All from my small stash. The front is boned with zip ties to keep the bodice straight.
