Miss Jean Brodie Tartan suit

Outline the story …
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark paints a character in Miss Brodie who is aware of the importance of spirit and creativity, and tries to nurture style and life in a fairly bleak and conservative religious and intellectual landscape. Out of arrogance, she embraces the Trump-like oversized personality and propagandistic flair of fascism, oblivious to the consequences. She is a cult-of-personality leader, and a character who expresses the spirit of the USA’s journey over the last 5 years. I was inspired to make this look by Elsa Schiaparelli and Frances Farquarson, who might have been Miss Brodie’s style icons. I used a Brodie tartan, a very lightweight wool lined with linen.
Outline the construction…
I have made clothes before, but never using tailoring techniques to adapt historic patterns, and never to the level of finishing and tailoring. I used two dress patterns and a hat pattern (all 1930s) to make this suit, adapting and redesigning in order to create separates. I am 6’2” and had significant difficulty trying to add length in the neck and shoulder area for these designs.

Girls, girls, girls! This is lovely – I had no idea there was a Brodie tartan. That 1930s vibe is great and those sleeves. I love the hat too and there is some nice pattern matching going on. Well done for the fit – that jacket looks the bees knees.
