Queen of Ice

Outline the story …
As a child I loved listening to Hans Christian Andersens "Die Schneekönigin" (The Snow Queen) so I decided to do my own version of this character. The detail that fascinated me the most was the moment in which the little Kay tried to place ice-pieces into the word "eternity" when little Gerda found him. So i decided to focus more on the ice-theme instead of the typical snow-theme approach.
Most of the time Snow Queens are meant to be white so I decided to create one in black, due to her strong and kind of dark character. Vines and thornes underlining the twisted and wicked mind of hers. The corset is covered in ice-crystals, like there were freshly fallen and little icedrops hanging from the vines to soften the hard look a bit and give it something delicate and divine.
Overall I wanted to achieve an elegant but cold and unapproachable look, a true "Queen Of Ice".
Outline the construction…
I feared cupped corsets for years and never find the courage to finally make one my own. But as this years entry, I thought it would be the time.
The pattern of the corset is selfmade and fitted to a friend of mine. It was an overbust corset which I redraw to a cupped corset with the help of Barbara Pesendorfers Cupped Corsets Tutorial on Foundations Revealed. Sadly I never had the opportunity to fit it to her, due to the current times.
The corset is made of 7 panels, the cup has 5 pieces. The moiré is fused to a soft coutil and also fully lined. It is boned with spiral steel and straight steel in the front and back. It has a modesty panel but for photos on the mannequin I always remove it.
The beads are sewn on by hand, some tiny Swarovski-crystals are glued in between them to give it even more sparkle. The vines are made of PU-leather and they have a wire inside to keep them in form.
This piece was a true challenge, skill-wise and also for my patience, to be honest. But I am proud I finally did a cupped corset and am quite happy with the result.
This is perfection, hands down! the mix of beads and studs and that shiny black fabric! I don’t know which part I love more :O

Damaris! I always love the shapes you create– beautiful job! And the use of the moire black fabric with the undulating shapes of the vinyl vines makes it almost seem as if this darkness has live and movement even with the trembling frost taking over. Fantastic job!

Cups actually frightend the hell out of me, hehe, but if you have a well fitting overbust corset, the tutorial from Barbara Pesendorfer will help and guide you through it. Still a lot of work, yes, but worth it & you will learn so much. So go go, you can do it!!!
And yes, currently I love beading, there is still so much I want to try and so much to learn 🙂
