Smaug
Outline the story …
J.R.R Tolkien wrote in "The Hobbit" about the grand in every way, but lazy dragon Smaug. That same Smaug is the inspiration for this coat. It's great for sleeping under, a bit too opulent for everyday wear, and should you grab the corners of the hem and spread your arms, you might even intimidate someone with your size and vibrancy.
Outline the construction…
Dark red extra fine corduroy, lined with two different tones of red polyester lining. Dark purple corduroy salvaged form thrifted trousers. Horsehair canvas, pad stitched to shape the collar and lapels. 11 hand crafted brass buttons made of sheet brass and silver solder.
The greatest challenge was the sleeves. Getting them to fit, make sense and have mobility, made me put sewing it off for solid 4 months . Discovered the gospel on pointy oval gussets from a youtube video(same goes for pad stitching ). And then again the sleeves. Finally went to grandmother for guidance and she was willing to part with her soviet pattern drafting book by K. Sokk " naiste ja meeste ülerõivaste konstrueerimine". Grit my way trough that and ended up with something wearable.
The original pattern was from burda 1/2007 which I completely changed and sized up. It was originally the pattern for a medieval dress. Mix of machine and hand stitching.
I love the gradient of the lining! Such an interesting and unique feature! I want 5 of them!
Beautiful coat. Did you make those pretty buttons?
For the sophisticated yet comfortable dragon… I love this, I would wear it! Really evokes Smaug’s luxe-yet-lazy vibe. The gold scale buttons are the perfect touch.
Love that inside picture! It’s so satisfying. Your piece looks very well constructed♡
Clever idea. Great coat!
Oh wow! I would love to scare people in this.
The buttons are talon shaped!!! Love the color you choose and such beautiful texture. Great job!
I WANT TO LIVE IN THIS COAT 🤩
