Bridget Tagwynn’s Habble Skirt
Outline the story …
The "Aeronaut's Windlass" by Jim Butcher is part of his Cinder Spires series. It is set in a fanciful steampunk world where people live in spires (basically each spire is a country and each level, or habble, of the spire is like a region or state and all is overseen by the Spirearc. My character is Bridget Tagwynn, Daughter of House Tagwynn. She is a hard working person, and technically a noble but does not like the other noble children because as she put it, Bridget "works for a living". Due to a series of events, Bridget is teamed up other noble children to work for the Spirearc, who cannot trust his current guard because there is a traitor and Bridget and her friends are new recruits to the guard. The setting indicates maybe the 1890s and Bridget, being a practical person, would wear something simple on her undercover mission. She is also used to working so would not want a lot of skirt getting in the way. This is why I chose the walking skirt. I wanted to do a full outfit with a bolero becasue Jim Butcher mentions bolero jackets FREQUENTLY. However, I finished the skirt to the best of my ability.
Outline the construction…
I did not make the shirt in the picture. I only made the skirt.
I used plaid cotton flannel for the fashion fabric and cotton broadcloth for the liner. I used the Truly Victorian walking skirt pattern.
The biggest issues was time. I over estimated how much I would be able to get done in 6 weeks, which is when I decided to enter. I have been BINGING CosTubers since July when I stumbled onto Bernadette Banner's YouTube. Honestly this community has been the greatest resource for me. I watched her vidoes on walking skirt's and Cathy Hay's green skirt video about 50 times to figure out pockets, which I made twice. First the pear and then the bag because I couldn't figure out the pear. Noelle from Costuming Drama gave me permission to have compassionate goals, so I didn't quit when I realized that I would not be able to do the bolero also and just focused on the skirt. I felled the inside seams because I want the inside to look pretty and I made sure that the front center panel was symetrical by pinning down the red line in the plaid and matching up the cross lines. I made the waistband 3 times. I hate waistbands. I wanted a thicker waistband so I whipstitched 2 lengths of tape together and encased it in the fasion fabric which I whipped onto the skirt.
Lovely! Such a beautiful skirt! This garment is splendid in itself, even if you didn’t have time to sew the bolero. I’m impressed by the fact you’ve made it in only six weeks, matching the plaid, and felling the seams. Well done!
Beautiful work!!
It looks great and comfy. I want to make one too😁
Beautiful work! One of my favorite little details is how the waistbands pattern is perfectly offset to the skirt. It creates a really fun dimensional effect!
Checks are not easy to work with but you’ve done so well! Love how the pattern compliments the pleats and drapes!
I love the excellent. Wonderful finishing with the tiny whip stitches great attention to detail!
Beautiful! I now need to have a plaid walking skirt in my wardrobe! Love it, great job!!!
This skirt is conspiring with the pattern pieces hanging in my room to whisper, ‘Make me!’ You’ve done a wonderful create here. I love the back gathers!
I love your skirt. I’m thinking this is my next project. Thanks for the inspiration.
you did a beautiful job- I love this skirt SO much!
Very impressive. You did a wonderful job on it. 🙂
Lovely work!
What a beautiful work you did! In love with your skirt! 😍
I love the whole front expanse and sweep of the skirt – the silhouette is very graceful and romantic. I’ve always been a little curious about that book series. Thank you for outlining the premise so beautifully.
I am in love with this skirt and must now read the book as well. Matching plaid is something I have yet to tackle and I am so impressed with yours! Your felling is lovely as well. 50 points for House Tagwyn!
Am I right and you bound the hem too? Fantastic finish work and pattern matching on this
Beautiful!
Beautiful walking skirt! I especially love the solid bound hem with the plaid. And nice work with the plaid – they’re hard!
waistband can be hard! Good on you for making it work so well.
This calls to my steampunk tendancies – wish I had more opportunities to wear a skirt! Lovely project, beautifully finished 🙂
Such a gorgeous skirt. You wear it well. Great effort!
That looks great and it suits you!
Very good product, looks like it took way more time than actually was available to you! Really good use of materials and really good hand stitching.
This looks amazing on you!
Beautiful skirt! Very well done!!😊
That turned out gorgeous! The back pleats fan out so beautifully. I’m amazed you made this in only 6 weeks, with all the fancy finishings! I have been eyeing that truly victoran pattern and now I think I found the inspiration to finally pick it up and start sewing ❤
You did a fantastic job.
Well done! I love, love, love your fabric choices!!
