Outline the story …
The "Aeronaut's Windlass" by Jim Butcher is part of his Cinder Spires series. It is set in a fanciful steampunk world where people live in spires (basically each spire is a country and each level, or habble, of the spire is like a region or state and all is overseen by the Spirearc. My character is Bridget Tagwynn, Daughter of House Tagwynn. She is a hard working person, and technically a noble but does not like the other noble children because as she put it, Bridget "works for a living". Due to a series of events, Bridget is teamed up other noble children to work for the Spirearc, who cannot trust his current guard because there is a traitor and Bridget and her friends are new recruits to the guard. The setting indicates maybe the 1890s and Bridget, being a practical person, would wear something simple on her undercover mission. She is also used to working so would not want a lot of skirt getting in the way. This is why I chose the walking skirt. I wanted to do a full outfit with a bolero becasue Jim Butcher mentions bolero jackets FREQUENTLY. However, I finished the skirt to the best of my ability.
Outline the construction…
I did not make the shirt in the picture. I only made the skirt.
I used plaid cotton flannel for the fashion fabric and cotton broadcloth for the liner. I used the Truly Victorian walking skirt pattern.
The biggest issues was time. I over estimated how much I would be able to get done in 6 weeks, which is when I decided to enter. I have been BINGING CosTubers since July when I stumbled onto Bernadette Banner's YouTube. Honestly this community has been the greatest resource for me. I watched her vidoes on walking skirt's and Cathy Hay's green skirt video about 50 times to figure out pockets, which I made twice. First the pear and then the bag because I couldn't figure out the pear. Noelle from Costuming Drama gave me permission to have compassionate goals, so I didn't quit when I realized that I would not be able to do the bolero also and just focused on the skirt. I felled the inside seams because I want the inside to look pretty and I made sure that the front center panel was symetrical by pinning down the red line in the plaid and matching up the cross lines. I made the waistband 3 times. I hate waistbands. I wanted a thicker waistband so I whipstitched 2 lengths of tape together and encased it in the fasion fabric which I whipped onto the skirt.
Lovely! Such a beautiful skirt! This garment is splendid in itself, even if you didn’t have time to sew the bolero. I’m impressed by the fact you’ve made it in only six weeks, matching the plaid, and felling the seams. Well done!

Beautiful work! One of my favorite little details is how the waistbands pattern is perfectly offset to the skirt. It creates a really fun dimensional effect!
Checks are not easy to work with but you’ve done so well! Love how the pattern compliments the pleats and drapes!

I love the whole front expanse and sweep of the skirt – the silhouette is very graceful and romantic. I’ve always been a little curious about that book series. Thank you for outlining the premise so beautifully.
