The Beast and The Rose
Outline the story …
My design was inspired by the 1740's novel Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
I decided to create a transforming gown because of the transformation Beast goes through in the book.
I decided to stick with the 18th century setting for the Beast, and created a waistcoat, coat, and breeches. Looking at the early 1700s I noticed that some coats were stiffened to give the bottom of the coats a fullness, which worked out perfectly to help partly disguise the rose gown underneath.
For the Rose gown, I drew inspiration from the flower itself, but also the 1949 Dior gown "Junon" when coming up with the design.
The corset is the Ref W Corset from Atelier Sylphe and the rest of the gown I drafted myself.
Outline the construction…
Beast's outfit is made of just under 8 meters of faux silk taffeta that I flat lined with a thin cotton. The biggest challenge for me was enlarging the patterns to fit my body shape/size as the original pattern was a men's garment from "Costume Close Up"
For the Rose gown, enlarging the corset pattern was a bit mind boggling as the bust gores extended in the the waist which caused me several issues. but after many mock ups I was able to figure it out.
The corset is made up of coutil and silk satin.
The blouse a chiffon. And, the skirt a mixture of tulle, organza, and satin.
I created several different shapes and sizes for the petals on the skirt and hemmed each petal with fishing line to give the organza some shape.
I think over all the biggest challenge that I came across for this was my limited time. While I started planning the project out last year when the theme was announced, I didn't actually start on it until the end of December.
The second challenge was figuring out how I was going to fit the tulle skirt under the suit!
I love those petals, the shape of the the bodice is beautifully curvy! Congratulations!!
This whole outfit is beyond stunning, I see that it is the same outfit but it does not even look like it could be.. The two very different looks have been married together in perfection
