Outline the story …

When we first meet Lila Bard in "A Darker Shade of Magic" by V.E.Schwab, she is thieving to survive in the streets of 19th century London, England. A young woman in stolen men’s clothing, Lila dreams of adventure and piracy. But when Lila steals from Kell Maresh, he comes after her – and Lila gets her chance to escape. Lila’s world – our world – is just one of many in this universe. There are four worlds, each distinct yet overlapping, and Kell is a rare magician powerful enough to travel between them. Lila convinces Kell to bring her to his world, where magic is as abundant as air.

Once there, in order to infiltrate a masquerade ball at the palace, Lila befriends a local draper who provides her with a suitable all-black outfit: knee-high soft leather boots, pants, shirt, and a velvety jacket, with a high collar and gleaming jet-black buttons. Completing the look is a leather half-mask, with curling horns, described as both “elegant and monstrous.” This outfit was my inspiration, and though I would love to tackle the full ensemble, to be realistic with the time available and my skill level, I created only the shirt. All other items are thrifted, altered, or props I created for a previous iteration of this costume. Lila has a flair for the dramatic, so I wanted to give her big sleeves and lots of texture, as well as a loose fit for comfort and to disguise her figure.

Outline the construction…

The blouse was worked entirely by hand, and most of the construction details, such as the standing collar, sleeve plackets, and yoke, were new to me. I gathered, stroked, and set-in the gathers from the front, using techniques outlined in Agnes Walker’s Manual of Needlework and Cutting Out. The long side and arm seams are mantua maker seams, which sewed and finished the seams in one pass. Both techniques were also new to me. I used the 1908 Countryside Blouse pattern from Truly Victorian with practically no adjustments. I used different front and back sizes and started with a mock-up, but found I only had to adjust the neckline and collar slightly. The fabric is a swiss dot cotton voile, with contrasting quilting cotton at the cuffs. There is fusible interfacing at the cuffs, collar, and button band; I wanted to use sew-in but couldn’t source any in time. The thread is silk, and I used a glazed cotton basting thread for basting and gathering threads. The back is gathered to a small band on the inside, with ties attached to hold down the back of the blouse. Instead of turning out a long narrow tube, the ties were folded and whipped from the outside. I used a similar technique on the cuffs, first attaching the inner and outer cuff to the sleeve before whipping the two cuff pieces together. The collar is done in the same manner. The blouse is finished with a narrow rolled hem.
